Obituary Announcement

Henderson, Val

Val Henderson died peacefully surrounded by many who loved her at St. Joseph’s Hospice, on Tuesday October 22, 2019.  Throughout her almost 84 years she lived life passionately! She was a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a nana, an athlete, a beauty, a scholar, a playwright, a musician, a singer, a true artist, and an inspiration. She loved her family, her friends, finance, and the “great debate”. She will be sadly missed by her family: Sue Dawe (Bruce), Mary Jo Shearer (Stanley-deceased 2019), Brenda MacAlpine (Bill), Diane Packer (Jim), Janice Balog (Rick), Kate Henderson (Steve), Lisa Henderson (Tom), Pete Henderson (Chilo), Sean Henderson, Alex Dawe (Jacqui), Erin McGillivary (Keegan), Lyndsay Doran (Chad), Allison Packer, Mason Packer, Cameron MacAlpine, Ryan MacAlpine, Oscar Henderson, Cleveland Henderson, Aris Tyros, Lauren Tyros, and Gwen Leach. She will be sorely missed by all, but we know that wherever she is, she is continuing to do it “her way” and is once again on the dance floor with the love of her life, Peter. The family would like to thank Dr. Kim and all the medical staff who took the time to listen and support our mom so that she could live with style and panache. A Celebration of Life will be held this Saturday, October 26, 2019 at McCormack Funeral Home - Stewart Chapel - 254 George Street, Sarnia, ON., from 2-4 pm. Remembrances and condolences may be expressed to the family online in “Val’s Guestbook” at In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice. Thank you.

To my 5 beautiful cousins; I'm heartbroken for you to learn of your loss of your amazing mom. Auntie Val was most certainly a force to reckon with, and when we spoke last year, I was floored by her continued personal power and zest for life, her still strong, clear, sexy voice, and her zen-like presence. May your memories bring you comfort. With loving sympathy, Ann

So glad to have met Val, played and sang music with her and loved her. She was such a giving, spirited person. The Angels are taking good care of her now.

I feel blessed to have known Val. What a wonderful inspirational lady. She had such a kind heart. The voice of an angel, who was such a pleasure to listen to. She gave me advice and encouragement, as well as a feeling that anything could be possible if you set your mind to it. She is going to be missed so very much by so many. My deepest condolences to her family, and all who loved her.

Judy Beresford

You have my deepest sympathy. Val was a friend since high school days and I appreciated her personality and friendship. Jeanette

I’m so saddened from hearing of Val’s passing. I spent many first Thursday’s at her house playing the ukulele and enjoying her singing. I’ll never forget her solo rendition of Fly Me to the Moon while Bill O’Brien and myself accompanied her on ukulele and bass. I’m so sorry for your loss.

So very sorry to here of Val’s passing. My deepest condolences to all the Shearer women. Your mother made your home a place where all were welcome. Going to your home and your mother is a huge part of my childhood memories. She was the “cool” mom. I often referred to some of her disciplinary tactics when dealing with my own children. She will forever live on in our hearts.

We were welcomed into Val’s home every month to enjoy playing music with her and others. She was a wonderful singer who just a few weeks ago showed us just how good she could harmonize or sing solo. When we left her home, we commented just how beautiful a singer she was and wished we could have listened to her years ago. Thank you for the short time we had with you Val. You were truly an inspiration to us and others. We will miss you Val and we are very sad for your loved ones at this time.

Paula & Mike Blair

What a rare and wonderful person Val was! She was always so kind, open, generous and welcoming to everyone. Her sense of humour, hospitality and musical gifts were greatly appreciated by all. It was a rare pleasure and privilege to have known this extraordinary lady. My deepest condolences to her family.

Val was a true force of nature. I missed seeing her in the last few years. I hope somewhere she and Peter are reunited, and enjoying each other's company.
