HILL, Lauretta Margaret (nee Shortt)
Peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Marshall Gowland Manor, Lauretta Margaret Hill passed away at the age of 94. She was the beloved wife to the late Lt. Col. Robert William Hill. Loving mother of Robert (Pauline) Hill and Mary Katherine Snyder. Cherished grandmother of Angela (Dan) Maure, Kristeen (Mike) DeGroot, Katie (Nikolas) Clarke, Jason (Veronica) Snyder, Jonathan Snyder, Jesse Snyder and Jeremy (Kristen) Snyder and great-grandmother to Alicia & Ethan Maure, Seth, Alyssa, Mya & Evan DeGroot, Justin Snyder, Junior, Janet & Jillian Snyder, and River & Reece Snyder. Predeceased by her parents, Ella Mary (Dicer) and Albert Elton Shortt and her siblings, Marydell McGregor, Jeanne Zink, Herbert (Skip) Shortt and Harold (Bud) Shortt. Lauretta will be missed by her many nieces and nephews and her loving friend, Jenny.
Lauretta worked for Bell Canada for over 10 years as chief telephone operator and enjoyed the role tremendously. She then married her childhood sweetheart, Bob, on August 18, 1951 and together they shared 51 wonderful years of marriage. She was a devoted military wife and constant support to Bob during his many years working for the Royal Canadian Air Force. During his years of service, they were stationed in many countries, including Europe, Canada and the United States. She was dedicated to being the strength that her family needed during those difficult times. She was a loving and kind mother to Robb & Kathy and is fondly remembered for her excellent sewing and cooking skills!
Lauretta enjoyed square dancing with her husband, traveling to Florida for many winters as Snowbirds, camping at Lakewood Christian Campground and attending to her beautiful gardens. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, daily trips to McDonald’s for her morning coffee, and eating all things chocolate! She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They brought light to her life, a smile to her face and she used endearing nicknames that only they would know and love. Lauretta was thoughtful, kind and giving. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Lauretta’s family would like to thank the staff at Bluewater Health Palliative Care Unit and Marshall Gowland Manor for the loving, compassionate care you gave to our mother, grandmother and Gigi in her final days. We will forever be grateful to each one of you.
