Obituary
William "Spike" Boston
Spike has officially sailed from the race shack, leaving behind a lifetime of memories on and off the water. He was the proud owner of Doyle Boston Sails in Point Edward since 1968 and a respected figure in the sailing community.
Spike William A Boston, age 80, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Hospice. He was born in Mount Clemens, Michigan, and lived in Point Edward for over 50 years, where he became a familiar and respected member of the community.
Spike was predeceased by his beloved wife Alice Boston who passed away in 2010, his parents Howard and Lolly Boston, his brother Skip, his sister Julie.
A skilled sailmaker and lifelong sailor, Spike dedicated much of his life to the craft of sailmaking and to the water he loved so much. His hands built more than sails—they built friendships and a reputation for quality, determination, and pride in his work. Sailing was not just something he did; it was part of who he was. As Commodore of Wednesday night racing, Spike found great joy in the race shack and took pride in seeing each race through to the finish week after week. He was also a dedicated mentor to many young people—not just in sailing, but in life. The lessons he shared reached far beyond the water, helping shape individuals who have gone on to become professionals, leaders, and contributors in their own fields.
Spike was known for being stubborn at times, but also incredibly generous, always willing to lend a hand or share his knowledge with others. Above all, he loved his family deeply and was a proud grandfather who cherished time spent with his grandchildren. His favorite saying, “Keep Smiling,” reflected the attitude he carried through life and the message he leaves behind to those who loved him.
Spike is survived by his children: Tac Boston (Kelly), Brad Boston (Liz), Brandy Boston (Ryan Gordon), and Lynz Jackson (Derek). He was a proud and loving grandfather to his five grandchildren: Alyssa, his “Monster Angel”; Cameron and Brian, his amazing “Meatballs”; Drew, his “Drewby”; and Charlie, his future boat and sail designer. Each held a special place in his heart and brought him immense pride and joy.
He also leaves behind his four bonus grandchildren—Mimi Durfy, Bailey and Carter Jackson, and Emily Legault-Gordon—who all shared a special part of his heart and were loved just the same.
He will be missed by his sisters Nancy (late Ray), Sue (late Michael), and Kay (late Edward), his lunch crew, special nieces and nephews and best friends who kept him going and aways supported him. His legacy will live on in the memories shared, the lessons taught, and the many lives he touched throughout his 50 years in Point Edward.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Oncology Department, Palliative Care team, and Hospice staff for the compassionate care provided, and for humouring Spike with his beloved “Point Edward water.”

We became acquainted with Spike and his family as long time customers of his sail loft. The honesty and integrity of his business is a tribute to his entire family. Personally he was very giving and sharing of his sailing knowledge. We found him to be a generous and welcoming friend. Sail on, Spike, with your heavenly first mate and crew...

Spike was so kind to Kev and I growing up. He helped us, encouraged us, and gave us opportunities and sailing knowledge that we appreciate beyond words. Having him let us crew on Hat Trick was just the best. It was always a joy seeing Spike at the club driving through, and taking the time to stop and have a chat with us. Again, he has had such an impact on Kevin and I our whole lives - he will be missed.

So sad to learn that Spike had passed away. I met Spike many years ago when dad was getting sail made for the families first boat. Somewhere around 1976 possibly. Years later he made some beautiful sails for my Shark. I also remember the summer he helped one of his customer race on Synergy. I was crew and I don’t think we ever lost…I hope for fair winds in heaven!!

In the 60s, Spike and I were sailing a rear -stear ice boat on Lake Saint Clair, heading for the surf north bar. As we approach the bar, about a half a mile out, going about 35 mph , we broke through the ice and the momentum of the sudden stop threw Spike into the water. I reached across and grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and pulled him out of the water. A frightening experience neither of us would ever forget.

My sincere condolences to the Family, Friends, and sailing partners of Spike. I am not sure there would be a SYC without the support and input of the Boston family and their leader "Spike." All of us who are members of SYC say thank you for your guidance, enthusiasm, and your love of sailing. I am guessing that a fine two master has descended to carry Spike to a sailing club somewhere above. Brian Gilmour
