Obituary
John Michael Thorpe passed away peacefully on November 2, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at the age of 80. Throughout his extraordinary life, he embraced many roles—from intrepid explorer and seeker of knowledge to devoted father, grandfather, and uncle. His adventurous spirit remained constant; it simply expanded as he grew and evolved. Whether riding his bike to the cottage, motorcycling across Europe, or driving through North America, his passion for discovering new places and learning never waned. As a father, grandfather, and uncle, he was always ready to listen and offer wise advice when it was needed. Cherished by friends and family alike, everyone has their own favorite Mike story to share. Now, Mike embarks on one last grand adventure, reuniting with his soulmate, where they can explore all the destinations, they dreamed of visiting together. This is not a goodbye for Mike; as an avid reader of fantasy and sci-fi, he understood that this marks the beginning of a new journey, all while watching over us. Though he will be deeply missed, we find solace in the thought that whenever we feel an urge to create a list, it is him guiding us from afar. I remember Mike as a quiet and stalwart man. May he rest in peace with his love, Toni, forever by his side.

My heart goes out to my cousins, my Grandma, my mom and aunts for this heartfelt loss. Uncle Mike was a jovial, kind person, thoughtful of all creatures on earth. My favorite memories of him are at our family cottage that was in Sombra. Whether he was putting in the plumbing for the cottage in the frigid river in springtime in the early days with my dad and my Grandpa and whoever else was brave enough to get into that cold water, or digging up the biggest fattest earthworms for us to use to fish, or hearing him in the rowboat leaving to fish at dusk heading out into the St. Clair river with a flashlight or lantern, or cooking dinner for a house full of family with a smile on his face and love in his heart, he was in his happy place. He will be greatly missed by myself and many, many people.

Thank you Mike Thorpe for one of the best days of my life. You, your dad and Woody Wodkowski and I sat in the “Cottage” and told stories all day like old men do. I will never forget!
